Today I had coffee with a friend who has been living in India. We sat in the sunshine on the outside deck of the cafe and I could feel the sun's warmth seeping into my chilled bones!! It has been another long winter.
Soon though I think the wind will come and explode open the buds on the ornamental crabapples and our streets will be full of pink and white blossoms. Soon after that the mock orange will open and spread its very special fragrance through the garden - well, actually in one spot in our garden and that being near the compost so it is a welcome presence… not that the compost smells or anything, it is just the old and the new, the dead and alive, the scented and the decaying contrasts - those contrasts that make our lives so interesting.
This is a small watercolour [~9x10] of a few of last years blooms on our mock orange.

the leaves on my mock orange are just beginning to open up in their very teeny tiny way! sometimes i think the anticipation of the blossoms' scent is almost as good as the scent itself! then when i actually smell it, i realize 'nope - the smell is the best!'
ReplyDeletethen there's the may tree
and the lilacs
and the evening scented stocks....

With the warm weather we shouldn't have long to wait!
DeleteAgain, a beautiful study!
ReplyDeleteRight now I am enjoying the scent of wild roses on my walks. And lilacs, though they're already beginning to brown... their life is too short, as is the life of all scented things, I find.
Thanks Violet - yes, I agree that the scent of the flowers does not last long enough!! We must take the time to enjoy them when they are ready!
